Pure Strategies' Support for Corporate Climate Action

GLOUCESTER, MA / ACCESSWIRE / November 9, 2022 / Pure Strategies, a sustainability consulting firm empowering brands and retailers to realize meaningful environmental and social improvement, is helping companies align with the COP27 vision for concrete action and progress to address the shared climate crisis.

An important starting point for businesses is to assess their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and set meaningful targets to reduce these emissions with a clear roadmap to achieve those goals.

Pure Strategies assists companies with taking these steps and provides examples for businesses to see how others are moving forward. For example, clothing and footwear brand Everlane worked with Pure Strategies to set ambitious science-based targets for climate, with an aim for net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. To meet these goals, Everlane is reducing emissions from its operations and supply chains and significantly increasing the use of preferred materials with recycled or organic content. This mitigation plan and the targets align with the Paris Agreement's 1.5℃ warming pathway to maximize impact. Companies can learn more by accessing the case study here.

Companies are also starting to look beyond traditional Scope 1, 2, and 3 boundaries for GHG emissions impacts. This includes assessing how a company's financial and public relations service providers may impede progress toward a safe and just climate future while transitioning away from a fossil fuel-based economy. Patagonia and Seventh Generation are among the leaders taking these steps to refine the standards, limits, and requirements for this expanded strategy. Recently, Pure Strategies worked with Seventh Generation to prepare a groundbreaking report on corporate climate disclosure in this area. More information about these approaches is available here.

Importantly, specific projects that lead to GHG emissions reductions and removals need to be implemented.

The eBook by Environment & Energy Leader: Implementing an Advanced Corporate Climate Strategy offers a view of the overall strategy, from target-setting to project implementation. Companies can download the eBook here.

For example, Pure Strategies is proud to be included in the USDA's Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities Funding through a project led by the American Sustainable Business Institute. This Growing GRASS & Climate-Smart Value-Added U.S. Commodity Markets project aims to help companies, such as Timberland, build supply chains that offer GHG emissions benefits from grazing systems.

Pure Strategies, Other Half Processing (OHP), and Timberland authored the GRASS standard which is the focus of the climate-smart grant. GRASS is a sourcing specification developed to provide corporate buyers of hides/leather with a regenerative sourcing approach. Companies can learn more about the USDA Climate-Smart projects here.

"The escalating impacts of climate change, and cascading severe weather events, are devastating communities across the globe," notes Tim Greiner, Managing Director and Co-founder of Pure Strategies. "Immediate climate action is warranted. Our hope is that these resources will provide the insights and direction to companies interested in taking positive climate action now. Stabilizing our climate and ensuring a viable and sustainable future for all is within reach. Our will to act is all that holds us back."
